Revitalising the Pioneer River waterfront area

Riverside Revitalisation Project

The Riverside Revitalisation project was jointly funded by the Australian Government and Mackay Regional Council. The intent of the Riverside Revitalisation Project is to provide an activated space that inspires the rediscovery of the Pioneer River edge as a quirky, distinctly Mackay destination.  The project further adds to Mackay’s tourism offering and supports liveability.

Stage 1 of the Riverside Revitalisation project is complete! The newly named River Wharves is located in the prime riverfront location between Paxtons and the Mackay Fish Market.  The community can now enjoy the finished project. Take a seat under the pavilion or picnic shelters to appreciate the blue river views, walk, ride, or run on the asphalt shared path, or participate/hold an event in the space to bring the stage to life.

Stage 2 of the project, the construction of the Pioneer River Floating Pontoon was also delivered in the early months of 2024. On April 22, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese cut the ribbon of the pontoon, officially opening it for use.
